Here's something most parents don't know: Apple and Google already built nudity-blurring into the phone in your kid's pocket. It runs entirely on the device — no photos leave the phone — it's completely free, and it's switched off by default unless your kid's account is set up exactly right. Most families never flip the switch because nobody told them it was there.
This isn't a subscription, an app, or a thing you have to buy. It's a five-minute settings change on each device. Let me show you exactly where it lives on iPhone and Android, what it actually covers, and — just as important — where it stops, so you know what it won't catch.
The 30-second version
- iPhone/iPad: turn on Communication Safety (Screen Time) for your kid, and Sensitive Content Warning (Privacy & Security).
- Android: turn on Sensitive content warnings inside the Google Messages app.
- It blurs explicit images before they show, on-device and private — but only in messaging/system apps, not the whole internet. That part is DNS filtering's job.
1. What This Feature Actually Does
When an explicit photo or video arrives — or your kid is about to send one — the phone quietly checks the image on the device itself and blurs it, with an age-appropriate "Are you sure?" screen and a way to get help or message a trusted adult. For younger kids it can require a parent's passcode to view or send.
The part that matters for privacy-conscious parents: the photo never leaves the phone. Apple calls its on-device engine part of Communication Safety (for kids) and Sensitive Content Warning (the grown-up version anyone can enable). Google calls its version Sensitive Content Warnings, powered by an on-device service called Android System SafetyCore. In all of them, the analysis happens locally — Apple and Google don't receive the image or the result.
It's the one protection that works on the thing DNS filtering can't fully reach: a nude someone sends directly to your kid in a text.

2. Turn It On: iPhone & iPad
There are two switches on Apple devices. If your kid is in your Family Sharing group, set up the first one on their device (or from your phone). Menu names move slightly between iOS versions — if a label looks different, search Settings for "Sensitive."
Communication Safety (for a child's account)
On the child's device: Settings → Screen Time → Communication Safety → turn it on. This blurs nude images in Messages, AirDrop, FaceTime, Contact Posters, and shared Photos albums, and adds the safety screen. For Apple IDs registered as under 13 it's usually on by default, but confirm it — don't assume.
Sensitive Content Warning
Settings → Privacy & Security → Sensitive Content Warning → turn it on. This is the version any account can enable, including teen devices that aren't fully locked into Family Sharing. Same on-device blur, applied across Messages, AirDrop, FaceTime messages, and Contact Posters.
Under-18 accounts get extra coverage automatically
On recent iOS, Apple turns these protections (plus Safari and search content filters) on automatically for Apple IDs belonging to users under 18. The fastest way to get the whole bundle is to make sure your kid's Apple ID has their real birthday and is in your Family Sharing group.
3. Turn It On: Android
On Android, the blur lives inside the Google Messages app (the default texting app on most phones). It's powered by Android System SafetyCore, which installs quietly through Google Play services. If you don't see the option yet, update Google Messages and Play services first.
Open Google Messages settings
Open Google Messages → tap your profile picture (top right) → Messages settings.
Find Protection & Safety
Tap Protection & Safety → Manage sensitive content warnings. (On some versions it's listed directly as "Sensitive content warnings.")
Turn on the warnings
Toggle Warnings for sensitive content on. Now incoming and outgoing nude images in Messages get blurred with a heads-up first. For Family Link-supervised kids, you manage this from the Family Link app; on teen accounts it's often on by default — verify it.
It's Google Messages only
Unlike Apple, Google hasn't released this as a broad tool other apps can use. So on Android it protects the texting app — not Instagram DMs, Snapchat, or the browser. That gap is exactly why you still want network-wide filtering underneath it.
4. What It Covers — and What It Doesn't
This is the part to be honest with yourself about. On-device blur is excellent at one specific job: explicit images in messaging and system apps. It is not a content filter for the whole phone. A third-party app — including CyberDaddy — can't reach into Safari, Chrome, Instagram, or Snapchat and blur what's inside them; only the operating system can, and only in the surfaces it controls.

See the two empty bottom rows? That's the whole-internet layer, and it belongs to DNS filtering — one router change that blocks adult sites, malware, and more on every device on your network. On-device blur and DNS aren't competitors; they cover different gaps.
5. Where It Fits in Your Layers
Think of protecting a kid's phone as a stack, cheapest and easiest first:
Layer 0 — On-device blur (this guide). Free, private, five minutes. Catches the direct-message nude that filtering can't see.
Layer 1 — DNS filtering. One router change blocks adult sites and whole risky categories across the house. Start here next.
Layer 2 — Screen Time / Family Link. App limits, install controls, and schedules.
No single layer is enough on its own. A kid who gets past an app limit is still covered by DNS; a nude that DNS can't see is still blurred on-device. Stacked together, they cover each other's blind spots — which is exactly how we build it for you.
